"Publisher's growth on the X-Press track"

2006 turned out to be a very good year for Kids X-Press Inc. The nonprofit publisher of a quarterly magazine showcasing the writing and art of school-age kids will finish this year having raised $90,000, nearly triple last year’s number, with plans to multiply that number in the new year.

Westchester County itself was a key contributor to Kids X-Press’ growth, thanks to a $35,000 contract for the magazine’s fall issue devoted to combating childhood obesity. That helped boost this year’s number of copies. Kids X-Press seeks additional sponsors willing to underwrite costs and cobrand with the magazine.

White Plains Hospital Center has agreed to underwrite a couple of pages in the fall and upcoming winter issues. And Entergy Nuclear Northeast has agreed to donate $50,000 over two years.

It’s part of a Kids X-Press campaign to generate income from its magazine as it has from workshops for young contributors conducted at area schools; 150 kids attended this past year. The publisher has also begun selling subscriptions, at $19 for a year’s four issues, home delivered. Till now, Kids X-Press has relied on drop-offs at libraries, schools and even some supermarkets.

“It’s all in an effort to sustain the magazine because the demand is high,” said Nivia Viera, executive director and publisher of Kids X-Press.

High enough for 110,000 copies printed this year. Print runs have risen over the past year to 20,000 copies per average issue, though the obesity issue had a larger run. Distribution has spread past Westchester into the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island. Copies have been picked up by readers in Philadelphia, Chicago and Arizona.

Going forward, Viera said, Kids X-Press plans to broaden distribution as well as reach out for support to the financial services community, including mutual fund and hedge fund managers.
